Invisible Cities

Author: Italo Calvino
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-08-01
Features: The edition of Invisible Cities was published in November 1972 by Einaudi in Turin. At the time of its publication, from late 1972 to early 1973, Calvino discussed it in articles and interviews in several newspapers. Below, we introduce this new edition from the Oscar series using excerpts from a lecture Calvino gave at the Columbia University Master of Fine Arts program in New York on March 29, 1983. The lecture was originally in English, but here we use the Italian text, which is based on two interviews from 1972 to 1973 and mostly unpublished in Italy. (This manuscript was later published in the U.S. literary journal Columbia in its August 1983 issue, pages 37–42, under the title "Calvino in the Invisible Cities"; some parts of the Italian text were published in Vogue Italia in its December 1972 issue, volume 253, pages 150–151, under the title "The Happy and Unhappy Invisible Cities.")
