Features: About "A Guide to Contemporary English Usage." English usage is a vast topic. To elucidate the usage of tens of thousands of words that students must understand and master, hundreds of thousands of words in length are simply not enough, and there are also books available in the market on this subject. We aimed to create some distinctive features:
1. Identify some words that are similar in sound or form and are occasionally confused or misused even by native English speakers, explaining the differences and pointing out the correct usage.
2. Based on our observations, Chinese students have long had a tendency to be somewhat careless. With the improvement in living standards and the increasing allure of market economy conditions, style among students has become more pronounced. We have tried to highlight some important points in word usage within the limited space.
3. Society is developing, and language is also developing. We have made efforts to report some phenomena in this regard to the readers.
4. In the understanding of some entries, we not only point out the literal meaning of the word but also provide appropriate cross-cultural communication comparisons.
5. To save space and encourage students to improve their self-learning abilities, we occasionally remind them to consult smaller or medium-sized original dictionaries. We have omitted phonetic transcriptions and some example translations. This dictionary is not the end of using English reference books but rather a stepping stone for young people to climb the mountain of English.
