The Wings of the Heart
Mom took her seven-year-old daughter to a large stone at the mountain top and said devoutly, "Child, carve your name here. If you achieve good grades at school next year, the king of the birds will leave a beautiful feather here for you. Every year after that, and when you collect twelve feathers, you will grow wings and fly freely."
"Really? Mom, I will study hard!" the daughter replied, her eyes filled with hope. She carved her name into the stone.
The next year, the daughter did well in school. Mom took her to the stone at the mountain top, and indeed, she found a beautiful feather there. From then on, the daughter studied even harder.
Every year for the third and fourth years, a beautiful feather appeared by the stone. After twelve years, the daughter received her university admission notice. That day, she and Mom went to the mountain top to find the twelfth feather.
Daughter: "Mom, will I grow wings now? I want to thank the king of the birds."
Mom: "No, child," she smiled, "Twelve years ago, when you carved your name into this stone, you already grew wings of the heart. Now, you can fly freely to pursue your dreams. As for these twelve feathers, they were not placed by the king of the birds but by me in advance."
