How to treat orchitis

Patient's question:

Pain and swelling near the genital area, lying down can relieve it, but standing for a long time makes it worse. Sexual activity is also affected. How should orchitis be treated?

Doctor's answer:

Orchitis, besides being transmitted through the bloodstream, is more commonly caused by bacteria traveling backward from the urethra to the epididymis and testicles, leading to epididymitis and orchitis. It can also occur after sexual activity, varicocele, prostatitis, ureteral stones, and other conditions.
Treatment for orchitis typically involves bed rest, supporting the scrotum, and avoiding sexual activity. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed: penicillin at 800,000 units per dose, 2-4 times daily, administered via intramuscular injection, or penicillin at 4-6 million units per dose, 2 times daily, administered via intravenous drip. For those allergic to penicillin, erythromycin at 0.9-1.2 grams per day can be used, infused into 5% glucose intravenously.
