Can a hernia be fatal?

Patient's question:

The doll was playing when suddenly she burst into tears. Crying and shouting, she said her lower abdomen hurt. We took her to a hospital for a check-up. The doctor said the doll had an inguinal hernia. Can you tell me if an inguinal hernia can be fatal?

Doctor's answer:

Hernia doesn't kill people. A hernia is formed when an abdominal organ pushes through a weak or defective part of the abdominal wall. Usually, it protrudes when standing or when the abdomen is enlarged, and disappears when lying down. It often recurs but is generally not life-threatening. However, if observed for a long time, repeated protrusions can cause the intestine or omentum to adhere to the hernia ring, leading to incarceration or strangulated hernia, and phenomena such as intestinal necrosis. Wishing your baby good health.
