The dangers of emotional eating Many people can easily follow Cruise's weight loss program and never feel like they are overeating. But I know some of you need additional help, especially those who tend to engage in emotional eating—this support is even more important than physical therapy. What is emotional eating? It refers to eating at any time when you are not physiologically hungry, and it is also the biggest self-destructive habit. Before I started guiding some of my clients, they would immediately turn to food whenever they encountered setbacks in life. They overate during happy, sad, or stressful times, and food had become their tool for self-soothing. To stop this self-harm and emotional eating, you must learn to distinguish between emotional hunger and nutritional hunger. Nutritional hunger is a physiological need that provides your body with "building blocks" to help maintain health and build lean muscle. Emotional eating is often caused by a lack of support, joy, or warm care. Only by replacing food with the comfort of friends and family can you break free from emotional eating.
In my previous book, The Morning 8-Minute Extreme Challenge, I created a powerful "Community Solution" that provides strong protection against emotional eating for my clients. After the book was published, I heard many inspiring success stories of weight loss, with many people practicing and loving it. The "Community Solution" teaches you how to use the support of your community to replace your need for food and satisfaction. It includes three key strategies:
1. Be Your Own Best Friend. People often develop a "love-hate" relationship with their bodies. However, you should respect your body and see it as the most precious gift you have received on your journey to success. Only when you respect your body and follow the Cruise workouts and eat healthy foods can you achieve great weight loss success. To be your own best friend, I recommend that all clients design a poster that I call the "Powerful Pledge." On the poster, write your own declaration, such as, "My current body is the most precious gift I have received!" Below this statement, write down the positive outcomes you believe this affirmation will bring. For example, you can write, "I will treat my body as the most important VIP" or "I will eat a balanced diet." Then, below these positive outcomes, write 10 sentences describing why your body is the most precious gift. For instance, you can write, "My body can take me to where I want to go." I encourage you to create your own "Powerful Pledge" poster, make three copies, and post them in three different places in your home or workplace so you can see them often.
2. Build a Support Circle. Create a network of at least seven people who support you and encourage you to stick to your workout program. Your inner circle can include family, colleagues, and friends. Choose people who enjoy talking about their workout experiences. Three of them should be email friends—people who can send you emails at any time when you feel like you might fail. Three should be phone friends—people you can call immediately for help when you have questions. One should be a friend who holds you accountable—a person you meet with once a week to review the challenges and breakthroughs you faced during the week's workouts.
3. Expand Your Circle. As a supplement to your existing seven-person workout support group, you can add more friends to your inner circle. You can join the reader group of Cruise's weight loss books or visit the GeorgeCruise.com website to connect with hundreds of thousands of people who are following the same weight loss program.
There is more detail about the "Community Solution" in my book The Morning 8-Minute Extreme Challenge. However, the knowledge you have learned now is enough to get started. If you want to learn more about the "Community Solution," I recommend reading The Morning 8-Minute Extreme Challenge.
