Is infant hernia serious?

Patient's question:

My younger sister has recently given birth to a little baby. The baby has been crying non-stop, which is causing great concern, and they also refuse to breastfeed. It seems the baby might have colic. I'm very worried and would like to ask if colic in infants is serious?

Doctor's answer:

The infant's hernia is not severe; it is a relatively common condition in infants, primarily caused by poor development of the abdominal wall muscles. A reducible lump is often present in the groin area. Someone suggested that we should not observe or handle these cases ourselves. We should make time to visit the general surgery department of the hospital as soon as possible. Further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis. If it is mild, conservative treatment can be adopted.
