II. Leisure and Entertainment Function Architecture
Leisure and Entertainment Architecture includes types such as gardens (narrowly defined), squares, and parks. The broad concept of gardens not only serves as places for recreation but also considers functions like protecting and improving the natural environment, as well as alleviating physical and mental fatigue. Its meaning encompasses not only classical gardens but also broadly refers to parks, recreational gardens, flower gardens, recreational green belts, and various urban green spaces. Suburban recreational areas, forest parks, scenic and historic sites, natural reserves, and national parks, as well as all scenic tourist areas and rest areas, fall within the broad scope of gardens. Below, we will introduce China's classical gardens as an example. Overall, China's classical gardens can be divided into three major schools: Northern Imperial Gardens, Jiangnan Literati's Free-Style Gardens, and Lingnan Courtyard Gardens. Northern Imperial Gardens primarily refer to the imperial gardens of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Compared to palace architecture, the buildings in these gardens are often adapted to the local terrain rather than arranged along a central axis. Whether it's the painted corridor in the Summer Palace or the magnificent glazed tiles of the Fragrant Hills Pagoda, every detail reflects the opulence of the imperial court. P50
