What is the relationship between newborn jaundice and brain hemorrhage?

Patient's question:

My blood type is AB, and my husband's blood type is O. On the third day after my baby was born, the jaundice level was measured at over 12, on the fourth day it was over 14, and on the fifth day it was 16.8, after which we transferred to another hospital for treatment. Screening revealed a small amount of blood clots in the brain, and we have been hospitalized at the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University for three days. The jaundice on the face and body has shown significant improvement.

Doctor's answer:

To determine if a child has breast milk jaundice, observe the child's reaction before and after feeding. Generally, there is no need to stop breastfeeding. However, if the bilirubin level exceeds 20 mg/dL, you can temporarily stop breastfeeding and use infant formula as a supplement. If the jaundice improves within 48 hours, you can resume breastfeeding. The bilirubin level may slightly rise by 2–4 mg/dL, but this will not affect the baby. Breast milk-induced jaundice typically disappears completely within 1–3 months.
