What are the causes of ADHD in children?

Patient's question:

My son is just 6 years old. The teacher has been complaining that he doesn't pay attention in class, doesn't fit in, and lacks self-control. We haven't paid much attention to it before, but after the teacher reminded us, we had the child checked for ADHD. But why did the child develop ADHD when he has been living with us all along?

Doctor's answer:

Genetic factors: Some parents may have shown signs of hyperactivity in their childhood, or in the case of dizygotic twins, both children may be affected, suggesting some genetic influences. Additionally, there may be factors related to mild brain damage after or during birth, such as hypoxia or asphyxia during the perinatal period, or infections like encephalitis or meningitis during infancy. These minor brain injuries can contribute to hyperactivity. Environmental factors are also possible, such as exposure to toxic or harmful substances during pregnancy, such as smoking or alcohol abuse by the mother, which may lead to hyperactive behaviors in the child after birth. Another factor is education (post-natal education), where the home environment and different educational approaches can vary.
