Features: As an ancient form of scholarly writing, the unique role of the Xue'an (case study) remains vibrant. Through case studies of scholars, it showcases academic achievements and the lineage of scholarship, becoming a distinctive type of academic history. Classic Xue'an works like Song and Yuan Xue'an and Ming Confucian Xue'an are essential reading for academic historians. Newer Xue'an works, such as Yang Xiangkui’s eight-volume Analysis of Qing Confucian Xue’an, have become renowned. This project adopts the Xue’an format, with each case study comprising approximately 50,000 words (though not strictly limited), divided into two parts: one is a comprehensive academic introduction by the researcher to the subject, about 30,000 words, and the other is the academic historical materials of the subject, about 20,000 words. This project focuses on case studies of a group of famous scholars from the 20th century. Due to the representativeness of the 20th-century scholars selected for this project, it presents a grand panorama of the transmission of academic torch in the 20th century, preserving credible historical records of 20th-century scholarship.
"The authors of this project include descendants of some of the selected famous scholars, inheritors of academic schools, and dedicated researchers of renowned scholars." The entire work comprises case studies of 13 famous scholars. Among them, Meng Sen, Lu Xun, and Liu Banruo lived before 1949 in the modern era, while Chen Yuan, Xiong Shili, Chen Yinque, Hu Shi, Guo Moruo, Gu Jiegang, Meng Wentong, Qian Mu, Feng Youlan, and Fu Siyan span the modern and contemporary periods.
