Is infant diarrhea with a runny nose a cold?

Patient's question:

It's almost the Chinese New Year. Yesterday, the child's uncle took the child out to play, and they played for a long time. It was very cold outside. After coming back, this morning the child had symptoms of diarrhea and a runny nose, and the child also seemed listless. Is the child's diarrhea and runny nose a cold?

Doctor's answer:

Hello! Based on the situation you mentioned, it's not necessarily the case. Don't immediately assume a cold just because they have a runny nose and give them medicine—it's not scientific. If the baby is just sneezing clear mucus without fever or other discomfort, and the nasal congestion isn't severe, and it doesn't affect their eating or sleeping, this is likely caused by air irritation to the nose. If the mucus is flowing more but the baby isn't uncomfortable, you can give them more warm water to drink and use lukewarm water (around 50 degrees Celsius) to warm the nose. Apply it multiple times, and the mucus will naturally come out.
