UFO: False can be true, true can be false

Author: (French) Gérard de Vaucouleurs

Publishing Date: 2002-08-01
Features: During my career in astrophysics, when I engaged in discussions with others, it surprised me that many people placed great importance on the views of scientists on certain issues, sometimes to an excessive degree. Some even said that the 19th century was already a distant past, in that era, Camille Flammarion could boldly declare "Towards the truth of science," even writing these words on the gate of his private observatory in Jüv?skyl?. Today, it is entirely reasonable to say that scientists have discovered that matter and life are infinitely mysterious, and therefore they have shed the arrogance of seeking absolute truth. This statement is generally true, but in any case, science still scares many people rather than bringing them hope. For those who observe its undeniable progress from the outside, science remains an absolute reference point for cognition. This is one of the main reasons that prompted me to write this book.
