Reputed Dictionary

Features: The term is renowned as a commonly used appellation in both ancient and modern times. However, as a noun, it is not mentioned in ancient dictionaries, leaving no trace for research. Even modern comprehensive dictionaries with extensive word coverage, such as Ci Hai (Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese), Hanyu Da Cidian (Great Dictionary of the Chinese Language), Zhongguo Baike Da Cidian (Great Encyclopedia of China), Zhongguo Da Baike Quanshu (Great Encyclopedia of China), and the Taiwan-published Zhongwen Da Zidian (Great Chinese Dictionary), all fail to include it as a separate entry. As a system of expression and an information carrier, it has yet to be the subject of dedicated scholarly articles or books. This paper attempts to provide a systematic description and exploration from seven perspectives and levels: the definition of the term, its alternatives relative and opposite to it, its form, its functions, the attitude it should adopt, the principles of its use, and a review and outlook.
