Right lateral ventricular cystic echo mass, suggestive of a choroid plexus cyst.

Patient's question:

Yesterday during the fetal ultrasound examination, one finding showed: anechoic mass observed within the right lateral ventricle choroid plexus, with clear boundaries, size 5x4mm, no apparent blood flow signals were seen inside.

Doctor's answer:

A choroid plexus cyst is a small cyst with a diameter of ≥3 mm, which is found scattered in the ultrasound examination of the lateral ventricle choroid plexus during the development of a fetus at 14-24 weeks of gestation.
More than 90% of fetal choroid plexus cysts disappear after 26 weeks of gestation, and only a few show progressive enlargement.
When a choroid plexus cyst is detected, further amniocentesis with amniotic fluid cell culture or cordocentesis with umbilical cord blood culture should be performed in combination with other clinical data to rule out chromosomal abnormalities such as trisomy 18 and trisomy 21.
Normal fetuses can also develop choroid plexus cysts, but most of them disappear after 26 weeks.
