Features: Medical Microbiology is a mandatory basic course for students in higher medical education institutions in China. Based on the training objectives of the seven-year clinical medicine program, which aims to cultivate future advanced clinical physicians, the content and organization of this textbook have undergone bold reforms. Its features are primarily reflected in the following aspects:
1. Learning from the experience of foreign textbooks, the general principles of bacteriology, virology, and mycology are introduced first. In the first 11 chapters, the basic biological characteristics of pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc.) and the fundamental principles of medical microbiology are primarily covered.
2. To closely connect with clinical medicine practice, the textbook categorizes pathogenic microorganisms based on their transmission routes or pathogenic characteristics. The content is focused, and discussions are provided on newly emerging or re-emerging pathogens and their pathogenic mechanisms.
3. To reflect interdisciplinary integration and modern microbial content, chapters on bacterial drug resistance, an introduction to microbiota, tumor-associated viruses, and hospital-acquired infections have been added. At the same time, the achievements or works of Chinese scholars in the field of microbiology are fully reflected and recognized.
4. To cultivate the self-learning ability and broaden the thinking space of seven-year medical students, the textbook includes introductions to future prospects or controversial issues, key references, a bilingual glossary of professional terms (Chinese-English), and relevant websites related to medical microbiology.
