The Dictionary of the Five Histories of the Southern Dynasties is a specialized dictionary with a scope limited to the five historical chronicles that record the history of China's Southern Dynasties (420-589) during the periods of the Song, Qi, Liang, and Chen. Among these five histories, Shen Yue's History of the Southern Song, Xiao Zixian's History of the Southern Qi, Yao Silian's History of the Liang and History of the Chen are all dynastic histories, while Li Yanshou's History of the Southern Dynasties is the latest to be compiled, essentially a comprehensive history based on the content of the first four. Today, when studying the history of the Southern Dynasties, these five chronicles are considered the most important primary sources. This book is based on the annotated editions of the History of the Southern Song, History of the Southern Qi, History of the Liang, History of the Chen, and History of the Southern Dynasties published by Zhonghua Book Company. It includes over 38,000 entries from the original texts of the Southern Dynasties' five histories, covering terms, names of people, places, states, dynasties, ethnic groups, works, institutions, historical events, artifacts, religious customs, astronomy, calendar, music and arts, medicine, and flora and fauna. The explanations are straightforward, concise, and practical. All names of people, places (including ancient states, capitals, mountains, rivers, lakes, passes, water conservancy projects, palaces, pavilions, and towers), ethnic groups, officials, classics, artifacts, institutions, historical events, as well as specialized terms in astronomy, calendar, music, medicine, and flora and fauna, as well as difficult phrases, idioms, allusions, and flora and fauna, are included. Entries are arranged in order of stroke count for the first character, and a Glossary Index is provided at the beginning, matching the order of the main text and noting the corresponding page numbers for easy reference.
