Author: (Han) Zhao Ye / Country: Mainland China

Publishing Date: 1999-08-01
Features: The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, written by Zhao Ye of the Later Han Dynasty, records the history of the rivalry between the states of Wu and Yue during the late Spring and Autumn Period. The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue is listed in both the Sui Shu·Bibliography and the Tang Shu·Bibliography, both of which attribute it to Zhao Ye and state it consists of twenty volumes. However, the current edition only contains ten volumes. References to The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue or the Wu-Yue conflict found in works such as the Annotations to the Records of the Grand Historian, the Annotations to the Selections of Refined Literature, The Records of Heaven and Earth, and the Annotations to the Waterways of the Nations also include passages or events not present in the current edition. The Sui and Tang Bibliographies list The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, edited by Yang Fang of the Jin Dynasty, as a five-volume work titled The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, Pruned. However, the Biography of Yang Fang in the Jin Shu only mentions that Yang Fang "further edited The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue." The Sui Shu·Bibliography lists The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, compiled by Huangfu Zun, as a ten-volume work. The Tang Shu·Bibliography records it as The Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, with the same number of volumes. The Song Shu·Bibliography lists The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, compiled by Zhao Ye, as a ten-volume work, but does not include Yang Fang's work. In the Annotations to the Ten Lists of Books by Li of Handan by Xu Tianju, it is stated: "Yang Fang once pruned and edited Zhao Ye's work, and by Huangfu Zun, the two were combined and corrected, with annotations and commentaries added." Xu Tianju himself believed that the current edition "is likely not the complete work," and the lost passages from The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue cited in the Annotations to the Records of the Grand Historian, among other works, were probably "those pruned by Yang Fang and not yet corrected by Huangfu." Qian Fu of the Ming Dynasty estimated that the content of the two missing volumes might be "Xi Shi Enters Wu" and "Fan Li Leaves Yue." The editions by Yang Fang and Huangfu Zun are now both lost.
