Features: Chen Shengshen was born in Jiaxing, a water town in southern China, nurtured by its beautiful landscapes; he grew up in Tianjin, the largest industrial and commercial city in the north, immersed in the bustling urban life. In the impoverished and backward old China, Chen Shengshen's childhood was relatively better than that of most children, and he himself said, "I didn’t suffer much from a young age." However, his life path was one of "struggling through hardship" in mathematics, finding joy in the process. In his later years, his inscription for his children was "Mathematics is fun."
Chapter 1911, Jiaxing 1911, a new page turned in the history of ancient China. The feudal monarchy that had lasted for thousands of years finally came to an end. On October 10, the Wuchang Uprising broke out, and the Qing Dynasty collapsed. The Republic of China was established, with Sun Yat-sen serving as the provisional president. The country was undergoing transformation, and Chinese mathematics was also on the verge of a new breakthrough. In the autumn of 1911, a young man from Wenzhou stepped onto the deck of an American steamship, marking the beginning of his mathematical career. This leading figure in 20th-century Chinese mathematics embarked on his journey. It was also in 1911, on October 28 (the seventh day of the ninth lunar month), that a male infant was born in a Chen family mansion on Xiaotang Street, Xiushui County, Jiaxing—later to become the great mathematician Chen Shengshen.
