Ming Tongjian is a monumental historical work written by the great Qing Dynasty historian Xia Jie. The entire work comprises one hundred volumes, serving as a chronological history of the Ming Dynasty in terms of politics, economy, military, culture, and foreign relations. The Front Part consists of four volumes, covering events before the enthronement of Ming Taizu (Zhu Yuanzhang) and spanning from the 12th year of the Zhenzong era of the Yuan Dynasty (1352) to the 27th year (1367). It records Zhu Yuanzhang's journey from joining Guo Zixing's peasant uprising to the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, using the Yuan Dynasty's era names. The Ming Ji comprises ninety volumes, starting from the first year of the Hongwu era and ending in the 17th year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1644), documenting the history of the Ming Dynasty after Zhu Yuanzhang's enthronement until the death of Chongzhen Emperor by hanging on Coal Hill, as well as the Qing army's entry into the capital. The Appendix contains six volumes, beginning in May of the 17th year of the Chongzhen era when the Ming's Fuguo King proclaimed himself emperor in Nanjing and ending in the third year of the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty (1664), using the Qing Dynasty's era names to record the history of the Southern Ming regime, particularly the anti-Qing struggles. The entire period covered spans three hundred and twelve years.
