The external application can include a 2% gentian violet solution, zinc oxide ointment or paste, pu gong ying oil ointment, 0.5% neomycin ointment, or 0.25% to 0.1% IDU (idoxuridine) ointment, or a 5% IDU dimethyl sulfoxide solution (for skin herpes). For facial applications, 10% aluminum acetate or zinc-copper mixture can also be used.
