Features: The management of Chinese hospitals is a vast systematic project. Currently, with the reform and development of healthcare, the modernization of hospitals has accelerated significantly, and hospital management will undoubtedly be further strengthened and improved. Hospital directors, who are at the core of hospital management, bear extremely arduous responsibilities. It is imperative to enhance the self-cultivation of directors, increase their knowledge of modern hospital management, study the laws of hospital management, improve management capabilities, and adapt to the development and needs of the situation. A comprehensive reference book that can serve as a consultant and assistant is urgently needed. The Department of Medical Administration of the Ministry of Health organized a writing symposium for hospital directors and experts from across the country in Beijing in November 1995. Over 50 directors and experts from various regions attended the meeting, many of whom were national outstanding hospital directors recognized by the Ministry of Health over the years. After thorough and in-depth discussions, it was unanimously agreed that compiling and publishing a "Handbook for Chinese Hospital Directors" that integrates scientific rigor, policy relevance, systematicity, practicality, advanced concepts, and operability holds significant practical and profound historical importance. An outline for the compilation was formulated, and writing tasks were assigned. In November 1997, a second writing meeting was held in Qufu, Shandong, where it was decided that the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical College in Shandong would compile the manuscript. Subsequently, the manuscript was thoroughly reviewed and revised by hospital management experts such as Han Rongfang, Zhu Fumen, and Qin Guojun, and finally approved by Director Yu Zonghe. On November 26, 1998, a finalization meeting was held at the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical College in Zhanjiang, where the entire editorial board reviewed and finalized the manuscript, completing the compilation of the book. The book is divided into sections on Hospital Directors, Hospital Management, Rules and Regulations, and Policies and Laws, comprehensively discussing how to be an effective director and how to manage a hospital well. The content is concise, practical, and based on reliable data and information, making it actionable. It also raises many issues worthy of further research, providing food for thought and exploration for managers. With the deepening reform and development of the healthcare sector, hospital management has become particularly important. To improve hospital management, it is not only necessary to explore theories but also to establish and implement a set of effective rules and regulations to standardize medical and nursing quality management, personnel management, operational management, logistics management, and other aspects. This will play a positive role in addressing issues such as overstaffing, inefficiency, and waste. In summary, we hope this handbook can assist hospital directors and also look forward to the broader hospital management community sharing more advanced and mature experiences.
