He was an European who developed an interest in Chinese culture and reported and information about China's science, philosophy, nature, geography, language, and folklore to Europe. He lived in China for many years, serving as both a scholar and a political activist. In 1650, due to the invasion of the Qing army, the Christian court of the last Ming emperor was threatened. The Yongli Emperor sent him as an envoy with a special mission to the Apostolic See Rome, as well as Venice, Paris, Vienna, and Lisbon, to seek support from European governments for the Ming Dynasty's anti-Qing struggle. His mission ultimately failed, and China remained under Qing rule for over two centuries.
