Features: The study of Western Xia art history is currently quite weak. Since we have delved into this field, we have deeply felt this. It is well-known that the art historical materials from the Song, Liao, and Jin dynasties are quite abundant. Therefore, work in this area was not only developed early but also produced a wealth of scholarly works, making it impossible for Western Xia historians to catch up. Although the art historical materials of Western Xia are relatively scarce, the continuous discoveries of Western Xia archaeology over the past century, along with the emergence of inherited artifacts, have undoubtedly opened another new door for the study of Western Xia. Given that there is such a wealth of material on Western Xia art history, why shouldn't we try to compile even a preliminary History of Western Xia Art?
The first step involves analyzing and summarizing current artworks from an archaeological perspective, and then conducting preliminary descriptions and summaries in accordance with the requirements of art history. These tasks are fundamental and necessary. Only through repeated study of the actual artifacts can one become familiar with their appearance and, consequently, grasp their essence, thereby summarizing their characteristics. The second step involves moving beyond the specific physical artifacts and, through rational thinking, discovering the cultural connotations embedded in these works.
