This book primarily introduces old maps from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. It includes 65 various types of old Shanghai maps, featuring both single maps and map collections; comprehensive maps, as well as thematic maps such as transportation, postal services, and shipping docks; maps of the British, American, and French concessions, as well as maps of the central area and the old city. There are hand-drawn color maps, black-and-white lithographs, official publications, and privately drawn maps. The publication dates of the maps range from the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty to the early years of the People's Republic of China. For the convenience of readers, we have slightly categorized the maps and paired them with corresponding old photographs, hoping to reflect the general outline of urban development in modern Shanghai over a century. This book, Old Shanghai Maps, is a condensed history of modern Shanghai.
After the liberation, especially since the reform and opening-up in the 1980s, Shanghai's urban landscape has undergone tremendous changes, and maps reflecting the new urban have been released at an unprecedented pace. The Shanghai Library, which takes it upon itself to collect local documents of Shanghai, is watching the city's changes with joy and doing its utmost to collect various versions of new maps.
