Features: Plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum are known as the "Four Gentlemen" in Chinese flower-and-bird painting and have been deeply cherished by the Chinese people since ancient times. Plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum are not only four different plants (including woody and herbaceous species) but also represent four distinct brushwork techniques, with entirely different forms, structures, and brushwork principles. Each technique can represent the painting method of a category of plants. Mastering them not only allows one to understand the brushwork principles of traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting but also enables the ability to generalize and apply knowledge to other areas. The techniques of plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum are the essence of traditional Chinese painting techniques, characterized by profound skills and a complete system. They emphasize conventions, rules, artistic interest, and character. Learning Chinese painting requires first entering the tradition and studying conventions. The techniques of plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum are the best compulsory course. The Chinese Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts incorporates the painting methods of plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum as the foundational course in Chinese painting techniques, serving as the gateway to mastering traditional brushwork rules and regulations. While flower-and-bird painting is indeed a compulsory subject for the major, students in figure painting and landscape painting are also required to study it. This series of technique books selects some teaching materials, sample paintings, and recent creations from my time teaching plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum at the Chinese Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, as well as works by renowned artists and student assignments. This allows for a more comprehensive and systematic understanding of our teaching approach and can also provide assistance to beginners in recognizing traditional brushwork and mastering traditional techniques.
