Ancient Chinese Art History Notes

Author: Tang Jian
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2001-12-01
Features: This book is based on the author's teaching notes and has been supplemented and improved. It is divided into twelve chapters. The first nine chapters introduce the art from the primitive society to the Qing Dynasty. Due to the limited of the book, it focuses on introducing representative art works and key artists of each period, such as the painted pottery art of the primitive society, the bronze craftsmanship of the slave society, the stone carvings and stone inscriptions of the Qin and Han dynasties, the Buddhist art of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the figure paintings of the Tang Dynasty, the landscape paintings of the Song and Yuan dynasties, and the flower-and-bird paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasties, etc. Since the author comes from a painting background, he has a particular fondness for some artists and naturally devoted more attention to them. The last two chapters of the book specially include the basics of appreciating Chinese art and the techniques of Chinese painting, aiming to help readers with non-art backgrounds grasp the fundamental methods of appreciating Chinese art. Tang Jian's Ancient Chinese Art: An Introduction is a distillation of his years of teaching Chinese art history at Shandong University's School of Art. His courses combine history, theory, and appreciation, so this book also reflects these three aspects.
