Features: This is a heartfelt novel centered on themes of love and trust. The story depicts the first love of retired mainland captain Feng Tianpei in his youth with a Taiwanese woman. Unexpectedly, the vows made under the blue sky and by the sea were separated by the narrow Taiwan Strait for nearly half a century. Now, though their hair has turned gray and they are surrounded by children and grandchildren, their first love remains beautiful, unforgettable, and etched in their hearts. For decades, they have faced the turbulent waves of the Taiwan Strait, calling out in passion and silently yearning for the love and trust, as well as the hatred and sorrow, joy and grief that often intertwine in the world. The author, a seasoned seafarer with 30 years of experience as a long-distance captain, has poured into this novel the vast material accumulated over the years. He vividly portrays the many trials of Captain Feng Tianpei. Once, while driving his ocean-going ship, the "Bergie," through a fierce storm, the vessel broke apart and sank in the Taiwan Strait. Fortunately, he was rescued and aided by a wealthy Taiwanese woman, which sets the stage for the reunion of Feng Tianpei and his first love after 40 years apart. However, at the time, Feng Tianpei was in a coma, leaving the story with a strong sense of suspense. The author employs techniques of temporal and spatial crossroads, as well as flashbacks and linear narration, to compress nearly half a century of time, their emotional journey, and the twists and turns in their struggle against evil into a limited space. He crafts vivid and distinct characters, moving and heart-wrenching, that bring tears to the reader's eyes. The novel also criticizes the corrupt and vile behavior of some officials during China's reform and opening-up period, mercilessly exposing the manipulative tactics of some seemingly respectable merchants who use money and beauty to pave their way. The work also warmly praises the support of the people of Taiwan and the wise media for justice and their criticism of evil. They hope for the three links (direct transportation), the early unification of the motherland, and the speedy reunion of numerous family members across the strait.
