Features: Since 1988, the Beijing Graduate English Teaching Research Association has organized the unified examination for graduate English degree courses in Beijing. Nearly 20 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions have participated in this examination, and some universities have also adopted the test for their Ph.D. students' English degree courses. To help candidates understand the examination and improve their performance, we have compiled this book, aiming to enhance students' comprehensive English proficiency through vocabulary exercises.
Graduate students face a challenge: although they have a considerable vocabulary, their usage efficiency is low. On one hand, they are influenced by traditional English-Chinese dictionaries or grammar books, leading to impractical or incorrect understanding of words. On the other hand, they fall behind the times, have outdated knowledge of words, limited grasp of usage, and fail to use them actively. The consequences of insufficient vocabulary include poor listening comprehension, limited reading comprehension, low translation skills, and inadequate writing ability. Although reading can expand vocabulary, vocabulary exercises are also an effective way to master words.
The features of this book are:
1. Mastering vocabulary through a "comprehensive" scanning method. The vocabulary exercises are arranged in alphabetical order and cover almost all the words in the "Teaching Syllabus for Graduate English."
2. Highlighting key and difficult points. The exercises not only compare visually similar or semantically similar words but also repeat challenging or hard-to-remember words to reinforce memory. The exercises also aim to test multiple meanings of certain words.
3. Combining the latest original publications to familiarize readers with new usages or meanings of words.
4. Including a synonym table and essential usage notes.
The main editors of this book are the organizers and participants of the vocabulary and review for the graduate English degree courses examination of the Beijing Graduate English Teaching Research Association. They are experts and professors with years of experience in graduate English teaching and testing. The book was also supported and assisted by the Standing Committee of the Beijing Graduate English Teaching Research Association and other members involved in the vocabulary and review. We sincerely thank them for their contributions.
