Features: When writing On the Distinguishing of Parts of Speech, the author had a relatively clear conception and design. This is as follows:
(1) Scope: Words that are difficult to classify. In teaching, analyzing parts of speech and distinguishing word classes in the context of sentences and discourse not only involves "obedient" words that can be easily handled but also "troublesome" words that are more challenging. For example, saying "man" is a noun is straightforward. But what about "men" and "individual"? That becomes a bit "troublesome." Since it is On the Distinguishing of Difficulties, it is necessary to select the "difficult" portion of words as the subject of the "distinguishing."
(2) Basis: Grammatical features. Parts of speech are the grammatical categories of words. When classifying words, it is essential to closely adhere to the grammatical features of the words. This is the fundamental point of departure and the basic standpoint. Considering the of difficult-to-classify words, the book also emphasizes the need to distinguish between general rules and special phenomena when classifying words based on grammatical features, as well as to clarify whether the features used are sufficient or necessary conditions for a certain category of words.
(3) Method: Logical proof. Since it is distinguishing difficulties, it means that arguments must be presented, and logical reasoning must be employed in the proof methods. This should be a key focus of the book. Therefore, the author proposes methods such as direct determination, exclusion, and analogy, which are consistently applied throughout the book. In the book, one often sees explanations like: "To distinguish nouns, one must first grasp several key features, such as being by quantifier structures, being combined with prepositions, and serving as subjects or objects, etc. However, since these features are not universally applicable internally or externally, it is necessary to carefully distinguish the nature of the conditions when classifying specific words. One must be adept at identifying all favorable conditions for the argument and skillfully apply methods such as direct determination, exclusion, and analogy in a flexible manner."
