Features: This book is a collection introducing major contemporary economists. It is the Western work that attempted to systematically present some of the world's most renowned economists after World War II, following Schumpeter's The Ten Great Economists. The book includes twelve economists, edited by J.R. Schalkenbach and Gareth Loxley, and was published by Macmillan in the UK in 1981. The editors selected these twelve economists based on the following three criteria. Their most important works were all written in the period of the last 40 years or so. The editors established this criterion because the book is not primarily intended to reflect the history of economic development but rather focuses on the modern characteristics of economics, addressing post-war prominent issues such as economic growth, inflation, the role of the state, large corporations, economic planning, and so on. Second, they conducted pioneering research in this field, rather than merely synthesizing or improving upon the ideas of others. Among these twelve, Friedman, Hayek, Hicks, Leontief, Samuelson, and Buchanan are Nobel laureates in Economics. Regarding Galbraith, Robbins, Robinson, Becker, Kalecki, and Srafa, although opinions in the economics community may vary, most views are relatively consistent. Third, they have all had a significant impact on their fellow economists. That is, their works have either been cited by others or have been intentionally or unintentionally adopted by new generations of economists in terms of their theoretical frameworks and analytical methods. The book includes a total of 13 articles. The first article is an introduction that discusses the purpose of the book, provides brief profiles of the twelve economists, and offers some comparative analysis of their economic thoughts from several main aspects. The articles introducing the twelve economists are arranged in the book in alphabetical order by their English names.
