Features: The author is a professor at the History Department of Xiamen University. He believes that customs, as an administrative institution for national foreign trade management, have become an objective indicator of opening-up to the outside world to a considerable extent. Therefore, they represent a new and important starting point for historical research. The author focuses on the modern history of Chinese customs. His research examines the establishment of customs and the opening-up to the outside world, the origins, inheritance, and development of the Chinese customs, explores the patterns of customs establishment throughout history, and summarizes the successes and failures of opening-up to the outside world in Chinese history. Faced with modern Chinese society, he combines foreign trade and foreign relations, focusing on the interplay between politics and economics, as well as between academia and the current situation. He pays particular attention to smuggling and customs anti-smuggling efforts. In this field, he has made pioneering breakthroughs and has collected and organized a significant amount of relatively obscure customs history materials. Since the 1980s, in the wave of reform and opening-up, our department, guided by the philosophy of mutual promotion between teaching and research, has inherited and developed traditional research strengths while continuously expanding into new research areas, giving rise to a series of new disciplinary growth points. Our research publications have been numerous and diverse, earning the attention and praise of peers in academia and the education sector.
