Features: The author provides highly detailed descriptions of the clothing of the two young men, whose social statuses are vastly different, resulting in significantly different wardrobes. What's remarkable is that from their attire, we not only understand the characters' social standings but can even glimpse their personalities. Pavel is tanned, barefoot, with his trouser legs rolled up to his knees—a vivid image of a fiercely independent wild child. Meanwhile, the description of Darya's blue striped sailor shirt and her tightly fitted embroidered socks on her tanned, slender feet strongly suggests the spirited, boyish stubbornness of a young lady from a wealthy family. This is vividly demonstrated in a later dialogue: After thinking for a moment, Pavel, without turning back, whispered to the girl behind him, "Don't make a fuss, okay? You're scaring the fish away." Instantly, he heard a mocking, teasing voice from above, "Ha, they ran away the moment they saw you. Besides, who goes fishing at noon? Look at you, such a skilled fisherman!" While Pavel was still whispering, Darya immediately retorted. This proud and willful girl cannot tolerate being criticized by others—look at how strong her personality is!
In the second paragraph, the most captivating aspect is the outstanding detailed description: When Pavel saw Darya, "his hand holding the fishing rod moved slightly, the goose feather float stirred gently on the calm water, creating ripples." The voice behind him excitedly said, 'It's, look, it's' (biting, look, it's biting). Pavel grew flustered and quickly pulled up the fishing rod, lifting the hook with a worm attached, causing a splash of water." Experienced writers know that plotlines are easy to devise, but details are hard to find. Exquisite details can reflect a writer's talent because details require meticulous observation of life and strong writing skills. What constitutes a detail? Let's carefully analyze the passage listed above. Why did Pavel's hand tremble the moment he saw Darya, causing the "goose feather float to stir on the calm water, creating ripples"? Why did Pavel's hand tremble? As a wild child, wouldn't Pavel be afraid of a girl? No, Pavel's hand trembled because, as a teenager just beginning to understand the world, he suddenly discovered a beautiful girl appearing before him like a fairy descending from the heavens. This girl was someone he had never encountered in his impoverished life circle—she was so beautiful, and her appearance was so sudden. In that instant, an inexplicable feeling made Pavel tense, causing his hand to tremble slightly. "The goose feather float stirred on the calm water, creating ripples." This is an obvious pun, representing the beautiful, hazy, and gentle feelings often experienced between young men and women at first sight, like mist and as light as the wind. I dare say, in that moment, Pavel's face flushed, but Darya standing behind him couldn't see it.
What's even more brilliant is that Darya didn't understand Pavel's inner thoughts but assumed it was the fish biting the hook. She excitedly said, "It's biting, look, the fish are biting!" How exquisite the detail description is, how strong the comedic effect! So, why did Pavel suddenly become flustered, quickly pull up the fishing rod, lift the hook with a worm attached, causing a splash of water, and angrily threw the hook to an inappropriate place, accidentally hooking it onto the roots of a burdock? This is the continuation of Pavel's inner turmoil. In that instant, his panic made him lose his composure. He was furious with himself for feeling so inexplicably flustered. A boy who prided himself on being strong couldn't let a girl he had just met make him so helpless. Thus, he "thought for a moment, without turning back, whispered to the girl behind him, 'Don't make a fuss, okay? You're scaring the fish away.'" Notice how I specifically added the word "whispered"—even though Pavel was angry with himself, his fondness for this girl was deep within him, so he couldn't help but whisper even when he was angry. That's why he quickly "was disarmed by this girl who had somehow appeared."
Beyond this delicate detail description, the author also employs outstanding contrast in character portrayal. In the third paragraph, which is the last paragraph of the entire text, the rough and arrogant son of the stationmasterengineer Shukhaliko, "Pavel the Pimp," forms a striking contrast with the slender and effete young man Viktor. Both are villains, but Viktor doesn't openly display his shamelessness and brutality like "Pavel the Pimp." Instead, he always presents himself as a cultured and refined young man. When "Pavel the Pimp" shamelessly boasts about how he "managed to get a beauty in the barracks for just three rubles who made your mouth water," Viktor disdainfully frowned and said, "Shukhaliko, you're still doing such lowdown tricks?" His tone was full of contempt. Is Viktor a good person? No! "Pavel the Pimp" "biting his cigarette, spat," and immediately exposed him: "What a 'clean' fellow you are. We all know what you're up to." When "Pavel the Pimp" kicked Pavel's worm can and started to hit him, this seemingly cultured Viktor stood by, doing nothing, because he knew how to maintain an image of refinement in front of the beautiful Darya—this was his cunning. When "Pavel the Pimp" was beaten badly by Pavel, as his friend, he refused to help at all—this was his cowardice. But when Pavel left, he whispered to Darya, "He's a notorious rogue here, Pavel Korchagin." This was his treachery. Viktor's treachery, cunning, hypocrisy—all were fully revealed, forming a sharp contrast with "Pavel the Pimp's" vulgarity, shamelessness, and simplicity. Compared to the former, the latter was clearly far more detestable.
Through the analysis of this article, "Pavel Fishing," students can understand a principle: an excellent piece of writing requires the comprehensive use of many writing techniques. First, in terms of structure, the material used in the writing must be cleverly arranged, so that the writing won't be disorganized and will proceed smoothly and effortlessly. Narrative writing can be structured according to the development of events, changes in time, or the order of characters appearing. Our "Pavel Fishing" is structured according to the order of characters appearing.
In terms of narrative language, the article is concise and unhesitating, never dragging, and highly vivid. To illustrate the importance of narrative language, we will analyze a passage: Darya held an unfinished novel, pushed open the corridor door, descended the steps, and walked into the garden. She pushed open the painted fence gate of the garden and headed toward the pond near the railway station tower. She crossed the small bridge and walked onto the main road. This road was like the shaded path in a park, with ponds on the right, lined with willows and alders, and woods on the left. She was about to head toward the old gravel pit by the pond, but when she saw a small fishing rod floating on the water below, she stopped.
