Features: Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a famous French novelist and poet. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is his representative long novel. The Gypsy girl Esmeralda performs on the street, and the Archdeacon of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Frollo, desires to possess her. Later, he discovers she has another lover, murders her lover, and frames her, leading to her being sentenced to death. The ugly bell ringer, Quasimodo, who is filled with love and humility for her, rescues her and takes her to Notre-Dame Cathedral for refuge. Frollo abducts her, forcing her to succumb to his beastly desires. After she refuses, Frollo hands her over to the officials, watching from the rooftop of Notre-Dame as she is hanged. In despair, Quasimodo, in anger, pushes the man who raised him, Frollo, off the rooftop, killing him. He then goes to the cave of Montparnasse, embraces Esmeralda's dead body, and dies with her, completing their "wedding."
