Dear Kitty:
Harry came to my house yesterday and met my parents. I had bought a cream cake, pastries, tea, and fancy biscuits in advance. It was quite extravagant, but Harry and I felt bored just sitting there, so we went for a walk. By the time he took me home, it was already after 8:10. Dad was very anxious, saying I was foolish because it was dangerous for Jews to be outside after 8 o'clock. I had to promise to be home exactly at 8:50. Tomorrow he's inviting me to his house. My girlfriend Yvonne always teases me about Harry. To be honest, I haven't fallen head over heels for anyone yet. Oh, no—of course I can have male friends—nobody should say anything about it—but my only boyfriend, or as my mother would say, lover, is a completely different matter.
One night, Harry went to see Eva, and she told me she asked him, "Who do you like more, Fanny or Anne?" He said, "That's none of your business!" But as he left (they didn't talk much after that all night), he suddenly said, "Listen, it's Anne. Goodbye, don't tell anyone." And just like that, he was gone. Obviously, Harry had fallen for me. It might be fun to try something new too.
Margot would definitely say, "Harry is a decent young man." I agree, but he's more than that. Mom is raving about him: a handsome boy, a sensible boy, a lovely boy. The whole family accepts him, and of course, I'm happy about that. He likes them too, but he thinks my other girlfriends are too childish—quite reasonable, actually.
Yours,
Anne
