Features: Dear teacher, what Mother said yesterday was absolutely right. From this morning, I finally realized that Teacher Peiboni is truly a respectable and lovable teacher. When I walked into the classroom, the teacher was sitting at the podium, looking at the seating chart while comparing it with the faces of the students, as if trying to memorize their names! Students who had been taught by the teacher last year peeked in from the hallway and greeted him: "Good morning, teacher!" "Good morning, Teacher Peiboni!" Some even walked into the classroom, shook hands with the teacher, and then ran out. They all respected him very much. It seemed as if they were all very sad that he wouldn’t be teaching them this year. The teacher replied with "Good morning! Good morning!" while shaking their hands but avoiding looking at their faces. He was afraid that seeing their lovely faces would make him even more heartbroken. I thought of how I felt when I said goodbye to my third-grade teacher three years ago, so I understood the teacher’s emotions very well.
The teacher asked us to take a dictation, and then he walked down from the podium, patrolling among the seats. He noticed a student with small red bumps all over his face and said with great concern, "Are you not feeling well? Stick out your tongue so I can take a look!" At that moment, a student behind the teacher stood on a chair and started doing silly tricks. The teacher suddenly turned around, and the student hurriedly sat down, lowering his head and blushing. He thought, "I’m definitely going to get severely punished." But unexpectedly, the teacher gently placed his hand on the student’s head and said, "That’s not allowed! You’re not allowed to do that again next time." He didn’t say anything else.
After we finished the dictation, the teacher returned to his seat and quietly watched us. After a while, he spoke in a low but warm voice, "Children, from today, we will be together for at least a year. We must love and care for each other. Don’t be afraid of me, and study hard. I don’t have any family members, but you are my family. Since my mother passed away last year, I’ve been all alone—without a father, brothers, or a wife. In this world, besides you, I have no one I love or find dear. I see you as my own children. I will love and teach you, hoping you will all become good young Italians. I hope you will listen to my words well. As long as we cooperate and encourage each other, we will surely achieve good results. That is my only joy and greatest comfort."
We listened attentively. Suddenly, the dismissal bell rang, and after bowing to the teacher, we quietly left our seats. The student who had been doing tricks walked up to the teacher and whispered, "Teacher, I was wrong! Please forgive me this time!" The teacher stroked his head and smiled, saying, "It’s okay. Go now!"
When I got home, I told my father about this. My father said, "That’s because you truly love that teacher." P7-9
