Features: The Waste Land is the third part of the novel series The Dark Tower. This novel draws inspiration from, and to some extent relies on, Robert Browning's narrative long poem Sir Roland's Return to the Dark Tower. The novel The Gunslinger tells the story of Roland, the only surviving Gunslinger in a world that has been "transformed," as he tracks down the Dark Man, the magician named Walter. Before the Middle World was split, Walter had hypocritically befriended Roland's father. However, tracking this half-human, half-demonic sorcerer is not Roland's ultimate goal; it is merely a milestone on his journey to explore the mysterious and powerful Dark Tower, which stands at the nexus of time. The second novel, The Threeカードs, begins at the edge of the Western Sea, not long before Roland's final confrontation with Walter. The exhausted Gunslinger wakes up at midnight only to find that the high tide has brought a swarm of crawling carnivorous creatures—"giant crabs." Roland couldn't escape the attack of the giant claws of the crabs in time, sustaining severe injuries and losing his right thumb and index finger, while also being poisoned by the venom sprayed by the crabs. As the Gunslinger continues his journey along the edge of the Western Sea, his condition worsens, and his life is hanging by a thread. The Waste Land begins months after the three pilgrims leave the last door on the beach. They have entered the Middle World and are moving inland. The break is over, and learning time has resumed. Susan starts learning to shoot, Eddie begins learning to carve, and the Gunslinger begins to experience what it feels like to gradually lose his sanity.
