Triumph of the Kings: Painting Appreciation
Maya was a legendary ancient civilization, and Maya culture was an important part of the ancient cultures of the American continent. This civilization existed for a very long time and created a splendid culture. However, the Maya people later abandoned all their city-states and mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind a puzzle that has remained unsolved for centuries. Among the remnants of Maya civilization, not many murals have been preserved. Nevertheless, through these few murals, we can still sense the past of the Maya people and some little-known stories. This mural is a fragment of the Maya murals discovered in Palenque in 1946. Palenque was a minor city-state in Maya history, so the discovery of such exquisite and skillfully executed murals there caused a great sensation. The murals were painted inside a relatively low-ranking three-chambered temple, covering all the walls. They completely recreate the entire process of a national grand event, from preparation to completion, from war to banquet. The murals in the three chambers are interconnected and echo each other. The left chamber depicts the early preparations for the grand event, with people appearing relaxed and leisurely; the middle chamber shows the fierce battle scenes of conquering enemies, with a tense, bloody, and cruel plot; the right chamber portrays the celebration of victory with great enthusiasm and joy. The entire mural is rich in content yet not disorganized, with each section being distinct yet harmoniously unified. The fragment we see is on the north wall of the central chamber, primarily depicting the scene of the victorious king and nobles judging and executing prisoners.
The composition of the mural can be divided into three levels according to the tiered steps. At the top level stand the tribal leader and nobles. The leader stands majestically in the center of the painting, holding a spear in his right hand and placing his left hand on his hip. He wears a long feathered headdress and tiger skin armor, exuding an imposing aura. Several close attendants follow behind him. On his left, four nobles stand side by side, all wearing bizarre animal head hats that symbolize the tribe's totems and dressed in luxurious and elaborate clothing. Some wear tiger skin battle armor and hold various objects that symbolize status and power. They are adorned with a variety of jade pendants and decorations, and one of them carries a fan. They are all robust and fierce, filled with the pride and arrogance of victors.
The middle row consists of terrified prisoners who are about to be executed. They are stripped bare, with disheveled hair and wide, frightened eyes. Under the leader's spear, the prisoner leader is desperately begging, his expression filled with misery, fear, and despair. Several prisoners kneel on the ground, trembling as they look at their bloody fingers. Their fingernails have all been torn off, a custom of the Maya in dealing with prisoners. One prisoner has collapsed to the ground, appearing limp and lifeless, a portrayal that is highly expressive and vivid, bringing the brutal scene to life. At his feet, another prisoner has already had his head chopped off, with blood flowing profusely. The tragic and horrifying scene of the prisoners' terror contrasts sharply with the imposing demeanor of the tribal leaders above, revealing an unimaginable brutality.
At the bottom of the painting are ordinary tribe members, holding spears, torches, and various totem symbols, shouting and cheering for the bloody victory. The level of painting is extremely high. From the composition, the layout is rigorous and well-organized, with figures set against the tiered steps in the background, creating clear layers and distinct characters. In the arrangement of the main and secondary figures and their sizes, the focus is prominent, with appropriate detail. The portrayal of the figures is unique and lifelike, especially the depiction of the prisoners' tragic forms, which is truly penetrating: their terrified eyes, twisted expressions of pain, and limp bodies on the ground demonstrate the painter's exceptional realism and meticulous attention to detail.
In terms of color, the blue background contrasts sharply with the red figures and the bloody scene, creating a striking and shocking effect. The clothing of the figures is colorful, with red, black, yellow, and blue interwoven in a vibrant palette. The depiction of the tiger skin color on the figures is particularly vivid and realistic. Before the discovery of the Palenque murals, people could only infer the level of Maya painting from some remaining fragments. At one point, Maya painting was dismissed as insignificant, but the discovery of this mural caused a great sensation, causing many to reconsider the artistic capabilities of the Maya.
