Features: Cui Dongxi, born in Shandong in 1962, studied at the Fine Arts Department of Luzhong University, the Central Academy of Arts and Design, and the Landscape Painting Studio of the China National Academy of Painting. Currently, he is a visiting scholar at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, a senior craft artist, and a member of the China Artists Association. Cui Dongxi is a mature painter worthy of research and discussion. He had already developed his unique style in his early years. In my impression, his previous works were too realistic, resembling field landscapes close to real scenery. In the new works presented in this book, I see his increasingly distinct characteristics, focusing on expressing meaning within landscape painting, with a shift towards relaxing expression within rational structures. This transformation stems from his dedicated study and enlightenment of traditional brush and ink techniques. It is also evident that while maintaining the independence of traditional ink and wash, he has engaged in communication and exchange with Western modern forms.
