Features: Made something to eat by hand, left a greasy pot and two bowls behind. It wasn’t really a big deal—just a case of laziness, stubbornly refusing to wash the dishes. But this tiny (lit. "sesame-sized matter") somehow got stuck in my mind. The next day, while sitting at the table painting, lifting a teacup to sip some tea, the ghostly shadows of a pot and two bowls suddenly reappeared. In a daze, I seemed to see their heads transform into a pot and two bowls. Just as the clock had struck 12 noon, I hurried home with a sense of atonement and carefully washed the pot and two bowls.
Once upon a time, there was a mountain, and on that mountain, there was a temple. In the temple lived a group of four masters and disciples who were born to be funny. The eldest master had long eyebrows that could catch flying daggers, the second master had big ears that could swat flies, the eldest apprentice could wash dishes with his feet, and the youngest disciple loved to play tricks and read The Wulong Yuan Four-Panel Comics. Countless absurdities made you laugh uncontrollably!
The Wulong Yuan is the breakthrough work of Taiwan’s comic artist Ao Youxiang. It tells the humorous stories of four master-disciples with contrasting personalities living in a temple, who practice martial arts while also engaging in adventures in the Jianghu (martial arts world). The characters are uniquely designed with unforgettable expressions, and the stories are full of twists and turns, making it a classic brand of original Chinese-language comics.
In 1982, Ao Youxiang, who had already been active in the animation and comics industry for years and had built up ample energy, began serializing The Wulong Yuan four-panel comics in the China Times in Taiwan. He later launched the full-page The Wulong Yuan comic series. The profound classical humor of Chinese culture resonated deeply with readers, making Ao’s works wildly popular in Taiwan and causing them to sell millions of copies!
After more than 20 years of creating comics, Ao Youxiang has never stopped writing. In addition to his signature work The Wulong Yuan, he has also published over a hundred classic works such as Pipi, The Tortoise and the Hare on the Spot, Happy Camp, and A Cat Called Picky. His contributions have played a significant role in promoting the prosperity of Taiwanese comics. He has received multiple Taiwan Excellence Comic Book Golden Awards and was jointly honored with Tsai Chi-Chung and Chu De-Yong as the "White Gold Bestselling Author" by Taiwan Times Publishing.
In 2003, Ao Youxiang’s comics, represented by The Wulong Yuan, took root in mainland China and were met with great acclaim. His studio in Zhuhai also did not disappoint, creating the sequel to The Tortoise and the Hare on the Spot titled The Tortoise and the Hare: The Dramatic Version. Not only was it published simultaneously in both Taiwan and mainland China, but it also won Taiwan’s "Dramatic Comic Award," making Ao the only renowned comic artist in Taiwan to receive this honor. At that time, Ao was at the peak of his fame.
Works by Ao Youxiang draw from tradition while subverting it. His newly released 130 Flash animation short films have also received unprecedented praise and are now reaching households across mainland China through online media, leading the trend of youth anime.
