Features: "News Listening Course" is a news listening textbook designed for undergraduate or advanced students of Chinese as a Second Language who have mastered over 2,500 words. It can also be used by individuals with equivalent Chinese proficiency for self-study. The news content selected for this book covers a wide range of contemporary Chinese topics, including politics, economy, diplomacy, military, culture, infrastructure, transportation, foreign trade, agriculture, science and technology, education, justice, youth, marriage, social interaction, and more—issues of great interest to foreign students or overseas individuals. The book consists of 32 lessons, over 80 passages, and more than 150 brief news reports, along with relevant national conditions knowledge. The materials are primarily sourced from TV and radio news broadcasts, with some lessons adapted from newspaper articles. The book is characterized by its standardized and practical language, rich and accurate content, and diverse themes and styles. Through this book, learners can familiarize themselves with and master over 800 common words and phrases, as well as more than 200 typical sentence patterns, understand the structural features of broadcast news, deepen their understanding of contemporary Chinese society, effectively improve their listening comprehension skills for news in Chinese, and lay a solid foundation for directly listening to and watching Chinese TV and radio news. This book is the second edition of similar courses. To adapt to new situations and demands, we have made several innovations:
First, we emphasize the cultivation and improvement of language skills, integrating listening skill training, news Chinese knowledge, and national conditions into one book, embedding knowledge transfer within skill training to provide more rational and effective guidance for listening and communication skills.
Second, we adhere to relevant Chinese vocabulary, grammar curricula, and Chinese skill proficiency standards, ensuring that the textbook’s content, positioning, and quantity are more reasonable and appropriately challenging.
Third, we integrate audio, video, and written language (due to copyright restrictions, video is currently only used on campus), effectively enhancing the textbook’s vividness and scientific rigor, facilitating audiovisual teaching, and improving teaching quality.
Fourth, the selection of topics is based on surveys of over 200 students from dozens of countries, and the lesson order closely aligns with the key themes emphasized by Chinese media each year, strengthening the textbook’s relevance while allowing teachers to supplement new content promptly, better achieving the balance between "old and new" and enhancing learners’ interest.
Fifth, we have added extracurricular listening materials to provide convenience for learners’ self-study outside the classroom.
This book draws on contemporary domestic and international language teaching and methodology research, focusing on improving language communicative competence and listening comprehension skills. Guided by the principle of "listening first, with attention to speaking, reading, and writing," it employs a variety of exercises to cultivate and enhance learners’ ability to understand content, extract information, distinguish language (including pronunciation, intonation, tone, vocabulary, sentence structure, etc.), summarize key points, overcome obstacles, respond quickly, and comprehensively apply listening skills, thereby.
