Features: "Mom is my best teacher" Ge Xiaoyan People often say, "Mom is a child's teacher." As I grew older, my understanding of this saying deepened. Whenever I watched TV, I always liked to lean my head on Mom's shoulder. One day, I accidentally discovered a strand of white hair on Mom's head. Curiosity drove me to gently part her loose hair. "One, two, three" I quietly counted, my heart aching slightly. Mom had truly worried for our family over the years!
I remember a few years ago, my uncle passed away. The news devastated my already ill grandmother, leaving her bedridden. Dad was very busy, and my younger uncle lived in the countryside, so the responsibility of caring for Grandma fell on Mom. Once, Mom heard that abalone soup could benefit Grandma's health and wanted to buy some for her. However, it was the depths of winter, and abalone was not only expensive but also hard to find. Mom went to great lengths—searching fishing boats and markets—to finally buy a few large abalone with the money she had saved by living frugally. As soon as she got home, she ignored her fatigue, steamed the abalone, and fed it to Grandma carefully, one bite at a time. Those bites were filled with Mom's deep love and care for Grandma!
When Grandma was on her deathbed, she lost control of her bowels. Mom took care of her, cleaning her and changing her clothes, often wiping her body. I think Grandma, in her afterlife, would be comforted to know she had such a virtuous daughter-in-law.
After Grandma passed away, I thought Mom would finally get some rest, but she enrolled in a correspondence course, planning to study for three years. I was truly puzzled. Mom was already so old—why study? It seemed Mom guessed my thoughts and taught me, "How can a person lack ambition? As the saying goes, 'Live and learn.' Only then does life have meaning. Do you agree?"
No matter the season, Mom always made time for her studies. I remember one winter night, I woke up in the middle of the night and saw Mom still writing by the light. Thinking of the cracks in her frostbitten hands, tears couldn’t help but fall onto my pillow. Mom’s studies were demanding, yet she took on all household chores to ensure I could focus on learning and Dad could work in peace. Mom’s white hair grew even thicker, and my understanding of her deepened every day.
People always praise Mom as a virtuous wife and mother, but I always believe she is my best teacher. She taught me how to respect the elderly and how to keep striving on life’s journey. P13
