Kennedy family was that of their eldest son, Joe Jr. During the early days of the United States' involvement in World War II, Joe Jr. chose to abandon his final year of law school at Harvard and volunteer as a fighter pilot. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Air Force's 7th Bombardment Group and served with the Royal Air Force in Britain, frequently conducting patrol missions from there. As his service term was about to end and he was preparing to return home, Joe Jr. volunteered for an extremely dangerous mission. Codenamed "Operation Iron Angel," the mission required participants to be at their absolute best, with ironclad wills and unwavering determination. He and his co-pilot were to pilot a "Liberator" bomber loaded with over 22,000 pounds of explosives toward a location near the French coast, where they would parachute out, leaving the "Liberator" to crash into a V-2 rocket launch site under remote control. However, for some reason, the plane exploded in mid-air before the pilots could parachute out. Upon hearing the news of his son's death, Joe Jr.'s mother, Rose, and father, Joseph Sr., were devastated. This was the first tragedy in a series of deaths and misfortunes attributed to the "Kennedy Curse." Rose Mary Kennedy was born in 1918 and was the eldest daughter of Joseph and Rose Kennedy. From a young age, she was treated as a disabled person. For most families, this would undoubtedly be a misfortune. We need not repeat the statistics on the number of disabled children born to American, European, or other parents; nor do we need to reiterate the fact that many of these children lead lives of compassion and are loved in return. However, it is heartbreaking that this tragedy, when it befell the Kennedy family, became a profound sorrow. Yet, like her brother's death in battle, her disability was certainly not the result of a celestial curse. During World War II, Rose Mary's sister, Catherine, worked as a Red Cross volunteer in London. There she reunited with Billy Harkness, the son of the Duke of Devonshire. When Catherine's father was the U.S. ambassador to Britain, Billy had accompanied her throughout London. They fell in love, despite religious differences and the disapproval of their families, and married in Chelsea in a secular ceremony. Unfortunately, Billy died on the French battlefield during the German invasion of France. Catherine, known to her friends as "Katie," was accepted by Billy's mother, the Duchess of Devonshire, but she was still treated coldly by her own family. However, in May 1948, after the war had ended, she flew to the French Riviera to spend a holiday with her father. The plane crashed in dense fog over France, killing Catherine, the Earl of Fitzwilliam, who was to greet her, and two crew members. Catherine was buried in Cadiz, Spain, the ancestral home of the Duke of Devonshire. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 could not have been the result of a celestial curse, just as Caesar could not have died on the Ides of March. Caesar was a victim of a conspiracy, stabbed to death by those closest to him, including his supposed friends. Similarly, John F. Kennedy's death was the work of long-planned conspiracies by his enemies, and I suspect some of them were even people who should have been his friends. As for the perpetrators, the U.S. government supported and promoted the lone gunman theory, which blamed Lee Harvey Oswald, a theory that is no longer taken seriously. Moreover, even if Oswald was the assassin, he was neither the one who cast the curse nor a Brutus. The assassination of Robert Kennedy in 1968 should have served as a wake-up call to the U.S. government about the crimes behind it. However, when the Los Angeles authorities, where Robert Kennedy was assassinated, were frantic and did not want their city to become another Dallas, the U.S. government seemed determined to turn a blind eye. On the night of the assassination, Senator Robert Kennedy had just won a major victory in his campaign, one that clearly put him on the path to the White House. By his own efforts, he had gained widespread support from the electorate, and those who backed him were convinced he would win the upcoming presidential election. Those determined to prevent this from happening were certainly not using a celestial curse; they were resolute in their efforts to keep him from the presidency.
