Features: Frostbite is tissue damage caused by low-temperature exposure in the body. It commonly occurs in the extremities and exposed areas, such as hands, feet, tips of the nose, ears, and cheeks. During winter, old sores are prone to recur. Frostbite can be classified as mild or severe.
Mild Frostbite: Initially, the skin in the affected area becomes pale, numb, and cold. Then, edema or purplish patches may form, accompanied by a burning sensation, itching, and localized swelling. Blisters of varying sizes may appear, causing pain or slight itching. Without infection, the area gradually dries, forms a black scab, and heals shortly after. The damage is usually superficial or full-thickness, commonly referred to as frostbite.
Severe Frostbite: Initially, the skin in the affected area is pale, cold, and numb, with loss of touch sensation. Then, it becomes dark red and swollen. After blisters rupture, the wound appears purple, with necrosis or ulceration. In severe cases, it may damage muscles and tendons, leading to dry, black necrosis and complete loss of sensation and motor function in the affected area. Severe infections may also cause systemic symptoms such as chills and high fever.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that this condition is primarily caused by cold exposure, qi stagnation, blood stasis, impaired local blood circulation, poor qi and blood flow, and tissue hypoxia.
