Clinical significance: In women during ovulation, the level is 704–1580 pmol/L; during menopause, it is 40–100 pmol/L. Increased levels are seen in: feminization in children, estrogen-producing tumors, gynecomastia, decompensated liver cirrhosis, and adrenal cortex hyperplasia. Decreased levels are seen in: Turner syndrome, primary and secondary hypofunction.
