The orchid leaves in spring are lush and verdant,
The osmanthus blossoms in autumn are bright and pure.
Full of vitality, each adapts to its season.
Who knows the hermits in the forest,
Who knows the recluses in the woods,
Are drawn to the fragrance by the wind.
The fragrance of plants comes from their nature,
Why seek the praise of the fair?
Why seek the admiration of the beautiful?
[Commentary] This poem, written after the author's disgrace, uses the orchid and osmanthus to express the noble sentiment of one who seeks no favor or fame.

In the Jiangnan region grow the crimson oranges,
Their green leaves remain even after winter.
Not because the land is warm,
But because they have the heart to endure the cold.
They could be offered to honored guests,
But are hindered by deep mountains.
Fate is what it is,
A cycle that cannot be traced.
The world only talks of planting peach and plum trees,
But why can't the crimson oranges provide shade?
[Commentary] This poem, through praise of the crimson oranges, expresses the author's indignation at being sidelined and his unwavering integrity. The entire poem conveys emotions subtly and ingeniously through the metaphorical technique of "using objects to express the author's intent." P16
