Publish Date: 2000-10-01
Features: The Wisdom Almanac is Tolstoy's last important work. Tolstoy devoted great effort to writing this book, and between 1904 and 1910, it went through three revised editions. It was also the book he most enjoyed reading every day, and he continuously read it in the years before his death. Tolstoy first conceived of writing this book in the mid-1880s. According to his earliest record from 1884, his idea was to "quote the greatest philosophers from all nations and all ages and compile wisdom that could be absorbed every day of the year." This Chinese edition is its first Chinese translation. In addition to compiling the thoughts of various thinkers, Tolstoy also included approximately eight hundred passages of his own reflections, which were the result of years of deep contemplation or excerpts from his diaries. Typically, each day in the book begins with his own thoughts, followed by quotations from other sources, and concludes with his own reflections. Through the rich heritage of wisdom created by different writers, Tolstoy brought wisdom to as wide an audience as possible, inspiring the best thoughts and sentiments in people, and showing them how to face themselves peacefully, living a life filled with goodness, satisfaction, and happiness.
