Why do some children develop mentally late

Patient's question:

The child is now in elementary school, and their grades have always been poor. A friend suggested to me that I have the child tested for intelligence. Why do some children develop mentally later?

Doctor's answer:

A portion of a child's delayed mental development can be attributed to genetic factors, such as congenital chromosomal abnormalities, among others. During pregnancy, if the mother experiences, such as emotional fluctuations, exposure to radiation, or drug-related harm, it may cause harm and impact the child's mental development. Some inconsistencies in the family environment, such as disharmonious parent relationships, single-parent households, or left-behind children, often receive lower levels of education, which naturally results in lower mental development.
