After the planning for the compilation of college textbooks in the humanities was formulated at the National Conference on the Compilation of Humanities Textbooks in 1978, representatives from ten universities and colleges tasked with writing the book—Beijing Normal University, Beijing Normal Teachers College, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Jilin Normal University, Shanghai Normal Teachers College, Harbin Normal Teachers College, South China Normal Teachers College, Northwest University, and Wuhan Normal Teachers College—held a compilation meeting in Harbin, formed a writing team, assigned tasks, and discussed related matters of textbook compilation. In March 1979, the writing team held a meeting in Shanghai to discuss the detailed outline of the book and widely solicited opinions from representatives of more than forty universities and related literary research institutions invited to the meeting. To further address some difficulties encountered during the writing process, members of the writing team attended a meeting in August 1979 with literary researchers and teaching professionals to discuss relevant issues, ensuring that the compilation of the book proceeded relatively smoothly.
