Actually, hysterosalpingography (HSG) is quite similar to tubal irrigation. HSG uses contrast dye, such as meglumine diatrizoate, to check if the fallopian tubes are open. If they are not, it might cause some discomfort. I haven't had tubal irrigation, so I can't compare the two. The procedure is very quick, taking just a few minutes. X-rays need to be taken before and after the iodine oil is injected.
